A week of travel calls for a week of peace and quiet at home. I nearly had that. The Matter of Taste event in Zurich called for an early start on Saturday, the 5:30 am train, with a late return. Sunday’s peaceful day of sunny garden work, with 14C, was interrupted by the thrilling flyovers of the Patrouille Suisse, putting on an aerial show for the ski crowd in Crans-Montana who were there for the women’s World Cup ski races.
The wonderfully warm weather, the second warmest on record, came with a price. Across from me I can see enormous slabs of snow sliding down the Zinal Glacier. And in Crans-Montana, just a few days before the races, an avalanche took the life of one of the rescue workers who was helping an injured person when snow and ice crashed onto a popular piste.
Enjoy the quiet dawns and sunsets, the brief but spectacular orange moon rise (which reminds me, I must soon try the bottle of orange wine from Neuchatel that is in my cellar), the melting slabs of snow on the Zinal glacier and the air show. It isn’t so bad playing tourist while staying home.
