Big news for canton Vaud – and Switzerland – is that Aigle will host the 2019 Bruxelles wine competition, one of the world’s largest. The event will bring some 300 judges to Aigle to taste 9,000 wines from 2 to 5 May 2019 at the World Cycling Center in Aigle.
The choice was announced as the 2018 Bruxelles competition draws to a close in Beijing, China. The Concours Mondiale de Bruxelles, to use its official name, took place in Brussels until 2008, when the organisers began to hold it in different countries.
The press release announcing the news notes:
Swiss wine entries to Concours Mondial have posted an increase over the last 3 years. In 2017, the country gained 42 medals, including 3 Grand Golds. Most of the awarded wines are from the regions of Valais and Vaud.
Switzerland took part in Concours Mondial for the first time in 2006. Ever since, it has been among the top ten countries by number of entries.
The selection brings to three the number of large international wine events that will take place in Switzerland in 2019: the Annual General Meeting of the Paris-based OIV (International Organisation of Vine and Wine) and the Fête des Vignerons in Vevey which has been organized once every generation (22-25 years) since 1797.
