This is the first year that Arvinis will be held in Montreux, the wine fair that traditionally heralds in the spring tastings season. At the most basic level it’s a showcase for some 5,000 wines from 4 continents and features a large number of Swiss wineries. Several workshops, from sushi and wine pairings as well as Swiss truffles and wine pairings to, of course, tastings of wines from Piedmont, the guest of honour this year – think beautiful Barberas and Barolos.

This will be the 30th year for the Geneva wineries open house day – the canton was the first to hold the event, which has gradually spread throughout the country, with larger cantons holding open house weekends. Geneva’s remains a festive, more intimate affair, with crowds able to easily move from one winery to another in the region.
The first of the spring cantonal wine open house weekends (Geneva is the 20th, but just for a day) in French-speaking Switzerland, over the long weekend at the end of May, offers a chance to sample many newly bottled wines. 230 wineries, 11:00-19:00.
Canton Vaud hosts its official canton-wide open house 3-4 June, from 10:00 to 17:00, in most wineries. Note that some wineries also hold their own open days, with dates and details listed on the Vins Vaudois web site. Details for the cantonal weekend will be added as they appear.

Lavaux Passion takes on an extra dimension this year, with the local wine festival celebrating the 10th anniversary of the terraced vineyards and villages of Lavaux being named a Unesco World Heritage site. Tw
o days of celebrations include 1,000 candles lit at 18:30 Saturday, wine & food pairings with notables sommeliers, boat rides and of course wines to taste, from 30 producers in this beautiful setting on Lake Geneva.
Note that you can purchase tickets online for CHF25 until Thursday 7 September – cash only at the desk the day of the walk. The guided hike through the vineyards rich in grape varieties is 8 km, from Sierre to Salgesch or in the other direction. It is relatively easy walking and shuttle bus service to the train station in Sierre is available every 30 minutes. This is a hugely popular hike that takes you through some of the most beautiful vineyards in Switzerland.
The Fully Grand Cru Association is holding its annual salon or wine-tasting event in Lausanne – a great opportunity to try some of the best wines made from this beautiful Valais native grape. 18 producers. Note that entry is free if you register in advance on their web site.
