Uncork now! Pinot Gris late harvest, Alpine Gamay – 13 February 2020

13/02/2020 by Ellen Wallace Leave a Comment

New Year’s Eve was the perfect night to open a late harvest sweet Pinot Gris wine. Badoux makes this classy Lettres de Noblesse white wine that increases in elegance and richness as it ages in the bottle. The 2011 is now perfect, with apricot and honey notes, great depth and excellent balance between acidity and […]

Esprit de Genève, Geneva area Gamays

16/04/2015 by Ellen Wallace Leave a Comment

I recently did two radio shows with WRS in Geneva. The first is about Esprit de Genève wines, red blends with strict quality charters, perfect as the seasons change. 22/11/2013 by Ellen Wallace Leave a Comment

Here’s a review of some of the 80 Swiss sparkling wines I tasted Monday, including some of those offered at Saturday’s event, to help you get started.

A word about the Gamay part of this: it includes newer spinoff grape varieties Garanoir and Gamaret, both developed in Switzerland, often used in blends. Swiss Gamay wines can be excellent – les Frères Dutruy in Founex have a particularly good line. If you’re familiar with this grape mainly through Beaujolais, you’ll find here well-structured wines with a deeper colour where the fruit is still very present but with more complexity.
