3,000 Swiss engines whistle salute for young train conductor

02/08/2013 by Ellen Wallace

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – Three thousand Swiss train engines blew their whistles simultaneously at 14:00 Friday 2 August in a salute to the 24-year-old engine driver who was killed Monday when his train crashed head-on into another in canton Vaud. He was buried at Cessy, France, near Geneva at the same time Friday.

He had received his permit one year ago.

His death is the first of a train conductor in 25 years, in Switzerland. The driver of the other train, who is under investigation for not respecting a signal as he pulled out of the Granges-près-Marnand train station, is on sick leave and receiving counseling.

RTS carries a video report of the hommage in some of the stations, a daunting sound.
