Bern, Switzerland (NZZ, Ger) – Zurich newspaper NZZ reported Thursday 30 April that the vignette, Switzerland’s autoroute use tax that comes in the form of a windshield sticker, will keep its present form, but fines for those who get on the road without a sticker could double.

The lower house of parliament voted Wednesday evening 98-51 to keep the present system.

The Socialist Party and the Greens had pushed for an electronic alternative, an e-vignette, to be introduced. This would allow for greater flexibility in charging smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles or casual users of the highway system. Opponents say this comes too close to road-pricing. The UDC (People’s Party) on the other hand wants to enshrine the CHF40 tax in the constitution.

The only change that is likely is the fine for using the autoroute without a sticker: the government is proposing an increase from CHF100 to CHF200.
