Electronic autoroute toll system en route

14/10/2013 by Ellen Wallace

Plan to replace sticker with electronic annual toll

BERN, SWITZERLAND – The current annual road tax sticker (vignette in French) in Switzerland will be replaced by 2019 by an electronic toll system, if the government has its way.

The announcement comes five weeks before the Swiss vote on increasing the tax from CHF40 to 100 a year.

Transport Minister Doris Leuthard mentioned the plan to a Swiss newspaper, without elaborating, but the planned system appears to be similar to those in operation in other countries.

The lower house of parliament rejected a similar idea in 2012, with fears that it would be the start of road toll. The sticker is evidence that you have paid an annual lump sum road use tax.
