Bern, Switzerland (GenevaLunch)
– The first award for Swiss Winemaker of the year was given Friday evening to Diego Mathier, director of the Adrian Mathier Nouveau Salquenen cellar in Salquenen/Salgesch, Valais, near Sierre.

This is the first year the award has been given by the Grand Prix du Vin Suisse, organized by Vinum, Switzerland’s wine magazine, and Vinea, which manages several wine events including the world’s main international Pinot Noir competition, the Mondial du Pinot Noir. The Grand Prix du Vin Suisse was created two years ago as a major marketing effort to give greater recognition to Swiss wines, which have traditionally marketed themselves by canton or even commune. One goal is to help the public become more familiar with Swiss wines in general but also to underline the remarkable variety of grapes used for wine in Switzerland. The country’s many mini-climates and varied geographical profile make it possible to grow far more varieties well than in most wine-producing countries. (Ed. note: see complete list of winning wines at the end of this article.)

Mathier amassed more points than any other producer by winning recognition for six bottles. Two of the cellar’s wines won awards, a top one for its Pinot Noir and a runnerup for its rosé. The four others were given "Summa cum laude" diplomas. Mathier himself was given a mechanical "Sport" watch made by Chopard.

A second award, the Prix Vinissimo, went to the Hutin family in Dardagny, Geneva, for its blended wine,

Berholier 2005, which gained the most points of any of the 1,572 blended wines entered in the competition.
