LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND – One-third of the people who live in Canton Vaud are foreigners, the latest statistics show. And the canton has four new cities, according to cantonal population statistics released 7 April.

The latest figures, for 2014, also show that for the first time in some years, the percentage of Swiss residents is on the rise, but the explanation is found in the number of foreigners opting to become Swiss, rather than a rising birth rate.

Four communes now qualify officially as cities, based on density rather than simply total population; Aigle, Payerne, Bussigny and Crissier.

The canton also published this week news about three major roadworks designed to make traffic flow more smoothly as the population around Lausanne grows. With roadworks on the N1 lake road around EPFL finished, the next stage has begun, near the University of Lausanne, from April to November 2015. Details
