Regional role strengthened in 2013
GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – The airport in Geneva in 2013 handled 14.4 million passengers, a 3.9 percent increase over the previous year, Genève Aéroport announced 13 January. The number of flights fell by 2.2 percent.
The 2013 passenger and traffic movement report is one of the best in continental Europe, according to the airport, which accounts for the increase by pointing to Geneva’s success as a dynamic international centre but more directly to better air links. Geneva is connected to most major hubs and 130 cities around the world.
Four companies carried the bulk of the traffic:
- easyJet, 41.53 percent
- Swiss with 14.46 percent
- Lufthansa 5.22 percent
- British Airways 4.76 percent.
The airport’s role as a regional hub has been growing, with 4 percent of 2013 passengers using it to transit to their final air destination.
Robert Deillon, airport manager, says that while numbers are up, the growth is more muted than in the previous two years, in line with flatter growth throughout the industry. A positive note: with higher airplane occupancy, the overall growth is up but fewer planes have meant a lower environmental impact.
