German radar spotters safe but maybe not for long

08/10/2013 by Ellen Wallace

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – A German web site has been published information about highway and road radar locations in Switzerland, keeping it continually updated thanks to Swiss drivers who send information to the site, reports 20 Minutes.

Publishing or publicly sharing in any way information about radars has been illegal in Switzerland since January, but Swiss authorities are currently powerless to stop someone in Germany from doing so.

That could change sometime after 7 November, when a European-wide agreement must be enforced by all countries who have signed it (only Ireland and the UK have not). The Directive 2011/82/EU is designed to ease cross border exchanges of information on road safety-related traffic offences. For now it includes eight specific offenses, but the list could grow longer.

Switzerland is not a member of the European Union, but it is participating.
