Getting close to CHF200 million from hail damage

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND – Suisse Grêle, the Swiss hail crop insurer, said Tuesday that damage to vines and other crops from the hail storm 20 June will probably come to CHF33 million, more than double the initial estimates.

Vaud and Neuchatel were most heavily hit, with CHF12m and 12.5m respectively in damages, while Geneva had CHF4m and parts of canton Bern and the Lake Biel region had CHF3.5m in damages.

Some 80 percent of farmers and grape-growers are covered by hail insurance. About three-quarters of the damage was done to vines and the rest to a mix of crops.

Car insurance companies have not yet finished examining damaged vehicles to make a revised estimate, but shortly after the storm the industry estimated CHF150 million in damages to thousands of cars hit by the massive hail storm.
