Some wines you should buy whether you planned to or not, when they go on special offer. A few Coops are featuring Aigle les Murailles 2006 at 50% off this week, just over CHF10, which is a bargain given its usual CHF20 pricetag: grab it, more than one bottle if you can.
This is a fine example of a classic Vaud Chasselas whose reputation has withstood time and trends, and it has become the callling card of the Henri Badoux winery.
If the name sounds familiar but you can’t qutie place the wine it might be because you’ve driven to Gstaad via Aigle, up over the Col de Pillon. The massive stone wall holding the vineyards as you start the steep uphill climb carries the name of this long-famed wine in large letters.
It’s a soft, harmonious Chasselas, perfect for summer meals. We tried it with slices of the excellent and flavorful but not strong “Bracconier” (poacher!) thin sausage, handmade in Vissoie, Valais, before dinner, and the pair were a great success.
