Greening of wine bottles – a wrinkle in the paper container

10/04/2014 by Ellen Wallace Leave a Comment

Yesterday wine pouches were in the news, with one of their selling points their smaller carbon footprint compared to bottles. Today paper bottles are in the news, but not for a happy reason. The US company that year began to make lighter and environmentally greener wine bottles from recycled paper has gone out of business.

The bankruptcy of the British firm appears to be tied to a shareholder problem rather than technical issues.

Greenbottle began to produce wine containers in November 2013 for a California product called Paperboy, a Paso Robles wine made by Truett-Hurst.

The recycled containers are lined with plastic, much like bag-in-a-box systems.
