GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – Crowds are streaming back from vacations, but the summer is not over, with a flurry of concerts and shows and other entertainment this weekend and next.
Reminder for Monday: school has started in canton Valais and it begins 26 August in canton Vaud, so drive carefully, particularly around elementary schools.
Weather forecast
Friday night is simply glorious everywhere, with the day’s highs of 29-30 dropping to a comfortable evening 15-17C. You can still catch an almost-full moon, if you missed the spectacular ones that crossed our skies the past two nights.
Saturday, possible heavy rain on the plain, especially in the Lake Geneva region, in the morning, but clearing later in the day, with highs of 22-24C. Sunday, rain in the morning again and clearing later in the day.
St Prex Classics Festival underway
The Saint Prex Classics Festival has a few tickets left for some of the concerts, I was told Friday afternoon by festival founder Hazeline Van Swaay – book quickly! Ten days of a surprising mix of theater, dance, classical music and opera with international stars moves into full gear Friday evening with a night of classic ballet dancers kicking up their heels to the sounds of big band swing.
Saturday night will see a recent addition to the programme, Pietragalla: choreographer, prima ballerina, director of her own company, dancing to a special programme choreographed for the evening, to the voice of mezzo-soprano Carine Séchaye.

Also on this week: the Knie Circus in Geneva, the Memoire & Friends wine-tasting in Zurich – and in Morges, the dahlias along the quai, a summer “exhibit”, are at their finest.
Coming up soon: GAOS has its annual student show next weekend in Nyon, with young people fittingly playing in West Side Story. Switzerland’s extraordinary federal wrestling and Alpine games fête begins next weekend – once every three years you get the chance to better understand this country through these sports. In Emmental, eastern Switzerland (worth a visit just for the scenery)
Be sure to put Vinea, Switzerland’s largest outdoor wine fair, on your agenda, the first weekend in September, in Sierre, canton Valais. It’s the fair’s 20th anniversary and wonderful things are planned – more on that next week.
