Lausanne Metro extension begins

LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND – The over-crowded Metro 2 run between the train station and Flon in Lausanne will get some relief, but not before 2017, when additional trains will be delivered. Phase 3 of the hugely popular underground Metro system in Lausanne is underway, with faster links between the station and Flon as a top priority.

The extension of the system is closely linked to a major Lausanne station development project that begins in 2016.

The M3, as the Metro extension is called, is a complex project that involves cantonal and federal money thanks to the impact on the system of regional population growth. The M2 is only five years old but has already passed its long-term growth projections. The Lausanne train station sees 120,000 passengers a day, and one-third of them connect to the M2 or M1 Metro lines.
