Lavaux holds breath on Unesco World Heritage decision

Lavaux, Vaud (Le Temps, Fre) – If all goes well and the Unesco World Heritage sites committee votes in its favour, the 14 villages near Lausanne that make up Lavaux will be ringing their church bells Thursday at 10:00. It has taken Lavaux’s population 1,000 years to carve out the impressive 800 ha of terraced vineyards that rise dramatically above Lake Geneva. The competition is stiff: 45 applications, many of them from Europe, have been made for 30 slots. Background
