Lavaux, Vaud, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – The word in from New Zealand this morning was good news for Lavaux: the Unesco World Heritage sites committee has voted to include the collection of 14 villages and their terraced vineyards as one of the Unesco proteccted sites. The group also announced that it has agreed to extend the Aletsch Glacier site to cover a wider area.
The committee, meeting in Christchurch, New Zealand, is taking several days to review applications for new sites and to consider which ones are endangered. An announcement was made earlier in the week that the Galapagos Islands have become endangered, mainly due to an influx of tourists. Early Thursday the Sydney Opera House was added to the list as a cultural heritage site.
