Public transport should reduce cross-border cars by 2019
GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – The new name of the Ceva project, the regional train service that will link France and Switzerland around the Lake Geneva area, is Léman Express. Officials from the two countries announced the new name Friday morning, after 7,884 people voted online during the first two weeks in June.
The new service will begin in 2019 and is expected to carry 50,000 people a day initially. It will have 230 km of rail lines, link 45 stations in Vaud, Geneva and France.
More than 200,000 people live within 500 metres of one of the stations and the hope is to reduce the number of people using cars to cross the border – currently only 16% of the 550,000 daily border crossings are done via public transport.
