GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – Gare Cornavin in the centre of Geneva will soon have a Sunday supermarket, with Migros opening a 460m2 store at the east end of the newly renovated station next spring. The city will then have two Sunday supermarkets, with the new Migros joining one at Geneva airport; the train station one will be about two-thirds the size of the airport one.
Cornavin’s renovations are now underway in the east wing, where the new supermarket will be located
The new store will be open from 06:00 to 22:00, reports the Tribune de Geneve, and it will offer convenience as well as basic household products.
It will be about three times the size of the Aperto shop in the centre of the station, whose manager told the Geneva newspaper that he doesn’t have a problem with the new store, where people are more likely to do their errands, while travellers looking for a quick bite, such as a good sandwich, are likely to go to his shop. And Migros, which doesn’t sell alcohol, is less of a competitor for Aperto.
Coop, according to the Tribune, is less happy – it also put in a bid for the store space. Also unhappy: unions, who see the stores as taking too much advantage of gradual easing of Sunday shopping hours without their employees benefiting.
