GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – This is a good week for additional sources of help and information if you’re new to the Lake Geneva region – or new to the world of babies.
Comparis, new web section on moving to Switzerland
Comparis, which for nearly 20 years has been providing consumers with price comparisons for services and goods, this week has launched a new section on its web site, “Moving to Switzerland”. The web pages provide a good overview of what you need to do or think about, and how to handle efficiently things like insurance, a home, a car, and more. An excellent starting point or reminder for the 190,000 people who move here from abroad every year.
Leman International Fair
Firstly, something for people who are not necessarily new in town, but who may be new to the world of antiques: you have a chance this weekend to bring your family treasures to Lausanne and have them professionally evaluated free of charge.
The ninth Leman International Fair at MCH Beaulieu in Lausanne Sunday 1 November offers newcomers a wealth of information and personal introductions to businesses that provide services of all kinds but it also has a special feature this year, with the option to have a Bonhams Auction House specialist value your “treasure or trinket”.
The fair, withmore than 100 exhibitors, is free and runs from 11:00 to 17:00; it is designed to be easy for families, so there are plenty of activities, food and drink.
A bit of self-promotion: Swiss wine book signing
I’ll be at the fair (stand 77) selling and signing my popular, illustrated book, Vineglorious! Switzerland’s Wondrous World of Wines (look inside). For those who aren’t already aware, I am Switzerland’s only English language wine journalist and Swiss wines are my specialty.
Check out the reviews in several languages. It’s the perfect holiday gift for anyone who loves wine and/or Swiss scenery.
At CHF24, the special fair price (online and in shops, CHF30) is a good deal, and the book was designed to be mailed at letter rate in a padded envelope, so it’s inexpensive and quick to post, in Switzerland or abroad.
Come and take a look, and we’ll talk about Swiss wines while you’re there.
Enter the world of babies
Three days to learn everything you need to know before the little one shows up – or if you already have children, this is a great resource: Baby & Kid Planet’s annual event at Beaulieu in Lausanne, with workshops, booths, activities for the family. October 30, 31 and the first of November.
Tip: fathers-to-be will want to check out the Swiss Wine Selection stand, which has them in mind – fatherhood is not all about changing diapers and nappies, right?
