Ontario winery’s Vidal marketing challenge

Ontario’s Vidal wine has a poor reputation after years as a mainly cheap, sweet dessert wine. Two brothers who have improved the wine, starting by reducing the yield in the vineyard, now have what sounds like a really nice crisp and fruity dry white wine. It sells out at the shop, but in restaurants and elsewhere, no one is buying it.

Enter the marketing advisors. A great story for anyone – for example Swiss wineries – trying to sell bottles to people who’ve never heard of them and aren’t aware of the good quality of the wine.

Vidal grapes, by the way, are a European-North American hybrid grape. Based on what I’ve been reading – I’ve  never personally met a Vidal grape – if I’m in Ontario I’ll look for a good fish restaurant and ask for the wine.
