Semaine du goût: beautiful “nothingness” in wine

17/09/2013 by Ellen Wallace

Even within one commune such as Féchy, different soils create distinctive terroirs that give different wines

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND / AMONG THE VINES – An accolade of enormous value was given to Chasselas by a notable Japanese wine critic last week.

Journalist Katsuyuki Tanaka, reports Pierre-Emmanuel Buss in Le Temps, praised the white wine so inextricably linked to its birthplace, the Lake Geneva region, in a speech entitled “Chasselas is nothing”.

Nothing for Tanaka is close to perfection, for this is the grape that excels in humbly saving itself for the expression of its terroir.

Buss accompanied a group of Swiss wine producers on a trip to Japan last week to market their wines. Tanaka was speaking at the start of a meal at the Michel Troisgros restaurant in Tokyo.
