Closed due to falling rock
Sion, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – Falling rock has closed the Simplon Pass since Friday morning 11 June, shortly after 10:00, but it is expected to open again Sunday evening, following a cleanup operation to remove debris. Helicopter surveillance in the area showed it to still be vulnerable to rockfalls Friday and Saturday. A car was hit by falling rock Friday morning, but no one was injured: the accident took place between Gondo and Iselle, about 300 metres from the Swiss-Italian border post on the Swiss side.
The Simplon is one of the main passes between Switzerland and Italy.
