ZURICH, SWITZERLAND – Northeastern Switzerland’s Gasthof zum Hirschen in Stammheim has been named the country’s 2014 historic hotel of the year.
It boasts reasonable prices, excellent local food and wine, and the restoration work has created a gem for anyone who love old-time but comfortable hotels.
The hotel has close ties to an old Zurich family, the Wehrlis, who built the Hirschen in 1684. The family remained the owners until the end of the 18th century.
In 1941 the Wehrli family bought back the guesthouse, then gradually restored the facade and windows in particular, and interior rooms, and maintained the hotel in what is today an impeccable state.
