GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – If you’ve ever tried to get a handle on all the AOC’s, IGPs, DCs, and other geographic indicators for products, particularly for wine, and felt overwhelmed, you might feel reassured to know there is a global network that is compiling a complete online list by 2014. Switzerland last week joined the group.
The Organization for an International Geographical Indications Network (oriGIn) said 19 October that the Swiss Federal Office for Agriculture (Foag) “decided to join the group of donors supporting its project of an online compilation of all Geographical Indications (GIs) currently protected in the world”.
The deputy director of Foag, Jacques Chavaz, says he believes the information Switzerland contributes will enrich the data compiled by oriGIn. “The financial support of the Foag will be devoted to carry out research concerning the European countries not members of the European Union as well as the GIs protected in foreign jurisdictions through bilateral and multilateral treaties.”
