Swiss love their trains, but cars even more so

20/08/2013 by Ellen Wallace

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – The average Swiss person spends more than 20,000 hours a year moving around in cars or using public transport, some 37 km per day per person, according to the Swiss Federal Statistical Office.

The figures are part of a report, “Mobility and Transport 2013”, published Tuesday 20 August.

But don’t call it commuting for work, because only 24 percent of the time is spent traveling for work, while 40 percent is chalked up to pasttimes.

And while the roads may seem more and more crowded, highway traffic has grew 14 percent from 2000 to 2010 while passenger rail traffic increased 57 percent during the same period. Air passenger traffic rose by 24 percent.

Cars nevertheless continue to dominate the way we get around in Switzerland: we use them 65 percent of the time compared to 25 percent for public transport, while using our feet and bicycles or other greener transport methods accounts for only about 10 percent of our locomotion.
