Swiss road news: tunnel death in Locarno, high speed in Fribourg

23/03/2009 by Ellen Wallace

Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – One person died, another was taken to hospital by helicopter and is reported to be in serious condition and several other people were injured Monday morning when a truck and three cars were involved in an accident in Locarno, reports ats/20 Minutes. The crash took place on the autoroute ring road, which was closed to traffic while police cleaned up a large quantity of diesel fuel from the truck.

In another road incident, police in Fribourg over the weekend picked up a man who was driving 203 kph on the A12 autoroute between Guin and Flamatt at 02:00. The speed limit is 120 kph.

They also picked up a driver going 151 kph near Avry-dt-Pont, in an 80 zone, and a motorcyclist in Châbles clocked at 134 kph in an 80 zone.

Photo: The Swiss Council on Accident Prevention says that speeding causes one-third of all accidents around the world. In early March it held a crash simulation safety test to show the public the difference seat belts can make.
