Bern, Switzerland (TSR, Fre) – Switzerland does it again – the country runs more trains than any other in the world, with 93.8 a day on every line, and on average 12 trains a minute. Japan, number two in the race to see how much rail traffic a country can move, has only 75.3 trains per line a day, for 14 trains every minute.
TSR points out that the down side of this feat is that Swiss rail traffic is near its saturation point, with little room to maneuver when trains are late or break down. In 2007 the number of kilometres run rose 19% and passenger traffic was up 6%.
