LUGANO, SWITZERLAND – Canton Ticino is feeling the wrath of mother nature: massive rains and mudslides last week took the lives of a mother and her daughter in a remote area, and Monday night the rain came again, heavily. MeteoSwiss says the canton has suffered from virtually non-stop rain since the start of November.
The heavy rainfall is having an impact on Ticino’s lakes. Lago Maggiore has reached danger level 5 out of 5 for flooding and Lago di Lugano is at level 4. Federal and cantonal authorities are closely observing the flood situation in the region.
Higher up, above 2,000 metres, the heavy precipitation is keeping early snow at a depth of 100 cm.
