ZURICH, SWITZERLAND – A massive traffic jam on the A1 between Bern and Zurich, one of the country’s busiest stretches of road, is having repercussions on roads in other areas. Twelve people were injured in the pileup that occurred when a truck crossed a safety barrier and hit another truck and a minibus heading in the other direction.
The accident occurred at 12:30 near the Wangen an der Aare exit and the highway has been closed in both directions since then.
Traffic is being re-directed towards Bern at this exit and traffic heading towards Zurich is being sent to Kriegstetten in Solothurn. The CFF rail company is putting on extra trains and staff to help alleviate the situation, with cantonal roads in a large area around Bern badly blocked.
