Drop-stoppers like the one on the left cost next to nothing and they do two things that make drinking wine a bit more pleasant: they keep the wine from running down the side of the bottle and leaving messy drips, and they make it easier to pour.
I get mine from wine shops or wine producers if they have them. They’re made of lightweight foil, are flat and you roll them up to pop them in the bottle. Rinse them when you’re finished. They take up almost no storage space.
Tip: be sure to push it far enough into the neck of the bottle that the wine doesn’t come shooting out, as if from a spigot!
These are great gifts as Christmas stocking stuffers, or for children with small budgets to give their parents (let the little one put it in the bottle).
Left: winning Vaud wines, at the 2013 Guilon d’Or/CD&C award ceremony in Lausanne.
