ZURICH, SWITZERLAND – The airport tax charged each commercial airline passenger will be lowered slightly in 2014, with the new rates in effect until 2017, the Swiss Federal Aviation Office said Friday, but no one is likely to be happy over the new tax.
The federal office was called in when the airport and the airlines, in particular Swiss, failed in August to reach an agreement for the new rates.
The new tax is lower than what the airport was asking – the money is used for airport upkeep and management – but higher than what the airlines would like.
Passengers will notice an almost imperceptible difference, with the amount falling in line with the recently dropped CHF5 tax for a noise reduction fund.
