Best Swiss wines, national competition finalists named

Juding at the Grand Prix du Vin Suisse, Switzerland's national wine competition

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – The Grand Prix du Vin Suisse (GPVS) finalist wines, 72 of them, were announced 22 August by Vinea, the Sierre-based organization that organizes the national wines competition.

The GPVS judging took place in June, when 3,000 wines from 600 producers were assessed in blind tastings during six days, by 160 judges (note: I was one of the judges).

This year’s list includes several newcomers, an indication that not only was the competition stiff, but that Switzerland’s excellent new, younger generation of producers is coming into its own.

Nevertheless, it’s worth keeping in mind that some of the finest small producers, who have built up a faithful clientele and who tend to sell out their stock early, don’t enter competitions.

Another positive sign is that the winners come from throughout the country, with good representation from the six main wine-growing regions for virtually every category.

The competition has 12 categories, with six top wines named for each category.

The winners of each, as well as winners of special awards including the Swiss Winemaker of the Year, will be announced 23 October during the Swiss wines annual gala evening in Bern. The event is organized jointly by European wine review Vinum and the Vinea Association.

New in 2012: sparkling wines were given their own category.

In total 674 wines were awarded silver and 256 were given gold, signs for consumers of very good to excellent quality. I’ll be writing more in the next few days about the silver and gold wines from each canton, in the run-up to Vinea, Switzerland’s largest outdoor wine fair.

A team of 30 provide support for the Grand Prix du Vin Suisse, ensuring that the computer system for noting the wines works flawlessly, that the wines are the right service temperature, and more. Here, a black-robed wine for blind tasting.
