GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – I had a fun few minutes with Peter Greenberg, US radio and television travel expert, who was in Geneva Tuesday to produce a show about what the city and Switzerland have to offer.
He interviewed a small group of people on a number of subjects, from the 18th floor Residence at the Intercontinental. It’s a fine place from which to admire Geneva on a clear day.
He and I talked about my book Vineglorious, and Swiss wines as one of the “musts” on the to-do list of any traveler coming here.
Once I have more details about the show airing, I’ll post them, as well as the audio recording or a link to it after the show runs.
Greenberg is the travel editor for CBS News in the US; he is known in the industry as the “Travel Detective”, the name of one of the several TV and radio travel programmes he produces and/or presents.
His job sounds like a dream, until you see the punishing schedule he maintains, with near-constant travel and interviews. The discipline needed to do that kind of work shows when you talk: he’s interested, lively and doesn’t look worn out after having already completed several back-to-back interviews. We spoke briefly about being journalists in Paris at roughly the same time 30 years ago; I worked for Time magazine and he was a correspondent for Newsweek, a job that prepared him well for the kind of work he does today.
He likes wines, he told me, but given his daunting air travel schedule and what that does to your metabolism, he limits his consumption, a sensible idea. Thankfully, most other travelers can sit back and relax a bit more and enjoy the local wines.
