Zap! Ticino sommelier’s speedy champagne uncorking

03/11/2014 by Ellen Wallace Leave a Comment

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – Switzerland’s Mirko Rainier has just entered the Guinness World Records , reports Swiss public broadcaster RTS (you won’t yet find him officially listed there), for uncorking 47 bottles of champagne in one minute, using a saber. Rainier, sommelier and manager of the Atenaeo del vino restaurant in Mendrisio, canton Ticino, carried out the bubbly and sword feat 9 September under the watchful eye of Sir Jack Brockbank, an official from Guinness who flew out from London.

The previous record was for 40 bottles in one minute.

The record-breaking uncorking was watched by 3,000 people, as part of Il Tappo alle Cantine, a local wine festival organized by the Club del Tappo in Mendrisio. Rainer and his partner Arianna Maugeri, an international events producer, organized the Guinness attempt to raise money for the SAM (Servizio Autoambulanza Mendrisiotto), the local first aid service.
