A Pinot Noir by any name

07/12/2019 by Ellen Wallace Leave a Comment

Pinot Noir takes so many forms; I decided Monday at the Mémoire & Friends wine fair in Zurich to ask a small number of producers who make more than one Pinot Noir for details about the differences. Here are a few notes: Clones and styles Weingut Wolfer, Weinfelden, Thurgau, near Lake Constance. Martin Wolfer (whose […]

October and March shake hands

08/03/2019 by Ellen Wallace Leave a Comment

Tonight we will eat the last of our 2018 pumpkins, stored in the cellar since October. Yesterday the frogs arrived and began courting like mad in the pond while high in the trees the Alpine woodland larks began their melodious courting calls.

Matter of taste 2019 walkabout, comparing wines

28/02/2019 by Ellen Wallace 2 Comments

This was a walkabout tasting of fine wines that let me compare different Swiss wineries’ Pinot Noirs. It was also an opportunity to make other types of comparisons among wines that have been given at least 90 points by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.

The Heart of the Matter

28/02/2019 by Ellen Wallace 1 Comment

Saturday I headed to Zurich for Matter of Taste, the fine wines walkabout organized by Robert Parker, which featured 600 wines from around the world that have received 90 or more points from Parker’s Wine Advocate. Most, in fact, have 92+ points. About 50 of these were wines from host country Switzerland.

The many landscapes of Swiss wines in winter

21/02/2019 by Ellen Wallace Leave a Comment

This has been a busy travel week with visits to wineries in several cantons. The many faces of this country’s physical landscape are a never-ending pleasure, even in winter.
